FAQs

What does Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) involve?

PRP (Platelet-rich plasma) treatments involve taking a small sample of blood from the patient's arm, placing the sample in a centrifuge where it is spun for a number of minutes, to separate the plasma from the red blood cells. This precious plasma is then subtracted from the rest of the sample - it is drawn up into multiple small syringes, leaving the unwanted red blood cells behind. These red blood cells are disposed of in the clinical waste. One syringe at a time, the plasma is injected into the problem area, be that in either the face or hair. This intricate procedure uses fine needle work, which helps spread those important leukocytes and thrombocytes into the upper, most important layers of the skin.

How long needs to be left in between treatments?

Recent research leans towards leaving a window of 4-6 weeks in between treatments. This gives the plasma a chance to undergo the necessary reconstruction of the upper dermis. If a client is brought back to the clinic too early, the desired results may not be seen.

We recommend between 4-6 weeks for skin, and 4-8 weeks for hair.

Is it painful?

We use some of the strongest topical anaesthetic creams available; these being the LMX4 and EMLA numbing creams. Our clients have expressed how effective these creams have been in reducing the slight sting from injections, especially when the creams are left on for around 15-20 minutes during bloods.

When can I expect to see results?

This depends on the pathology/disease or objective in question (i.e healing of acne/rosacea/scarring). Changes in the tightness and glow of the skin can be seen as quickly as just over a week. The treatment of acne/rosacea/scarring may take 3-4 sessions. By and large, results for the skin are seen much earlier when compared to the more progressive nature of hair regrowth/thickening.

The restoration of thin hair can take months (and multiple treatments), as this is a complex process. Hair follicles need to exist in the first place for the hair to repopulate and thicken; injecting plasma into inactive follicles won’t revive what was once a full head of hair. It is important to have realistic expectations with hair - please take a look at our results page.

We must remind clients that results vary from person to person, based on age, diet, and medical history, along with many other individual factors.
