Does PRP Work for Hair Loss? Everything You Need to Know

There’s a lot of conversation around hair loss treatments. Shampoos that promise regrowth, supplements with before and after photos, and procedures that sound impressive but have little evidence to back them up.

You might be wondering, does PRP work for hair loss? and this is where PRP is different. It’s not a new trend or a gimmick, it’s a well-researched, clinically used treatment with real results for the right patients.

What Is PRP Treatment For Hair and How Does It Work?

PRP stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma and it’s a treatment that uses your own blood to stimulate hair growth.

We use a small amount of your own blood that is spun at a high speed to separate the plasma from your red blood cells.

When injected into your scalp, those growth factors signal to weakened hair follicles to be more active, helping with growth.

Does PRP Actually Work For Hair Loss?

PRP therapy has been studied for over a decade and has become more popular over recent years. For many people PRP for hair loss has shown statistically significant improvement in hair density and thickness after a course of PRP treatments.

Typically PRP works best on follicles that are thinning rather than those that have completely stopped producing hair.

That said, it doesn’t always work for everyone. Before we start any treatments at Pumice and Willow we have a consultation with you to determine exactly what treatment would work best for you and what the results could typically look like.

Who Is a Good Candidate For PRP Hair Treatment?

People who are in the earlier to mid stages of hair loss tend to see the best results from PRP treatment. If you’ve noticed increased shedding or a reduction in hair thickness, PRP for hair loss can be a great treatment for you, especially if you’re seeking a non-surgical option.

The PRP hair treatment is also a strong option for anyone who’s had a hair transplant and wants to support graft recovery and density.

It’s less likely that PRP will be effective if your hair follies have been dormant for a long time. This is exactly why we start everyone with a consultation to make sure that PRP is actually the right choice for you.

What To Expect During a PRP Hair Loss Treatment

The process takes around 60 to 90 minutes from start to finish and here’s what to expect. We’ll take a small sample of your own blood from your arm, similar to when you have a blood test.

That blood is then spun to isolate the platelet-rich plasma. The scalp is then prepared and the PRP is injected into the areas of concern using a fine needle.

Most people find the process completely manageable, though some sensitivity in the scalp is normal.

With this treatment there is no significant downtime. Some people experience milk redness or tenderness in the treated area for a day or two, but most are back to their normal routine the same day.

How Many PRP Sessions Do You Need to See Results?

A typical course of PRP involves three to four sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. After the initial course, many people do benefit from maintenance sessions every three to six months to sustain the results.

We know that by nature hair growth can be slow so we are realistic in your initial consultation with how long it will take you personally to see results based on your current situation.

Most people start to notice change between three and six months after beginning treatment. This includes improved thickness, reduced shredding or new growth in areas that had been thinning.

How Does PRP Compare to Other Hair Loss Treatments?

PRP for hair loss is great for people who want a non-surgical hair loss treatment.

Unlike topical treatments, PRP works by directly stimulating the follicle rather than relying on daily application. This also makes it much more convenient.

At Pumice & Willow we offer PRP alongside Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT). In many cases, a combined approach delivers better results. The right plan depends on what’s causing your hair loss and at what level, which is why we always start with a consultation.
